The hit was generated by a link from Google Images to the overview shot of Perry posted last July, shortly before the 5000th visit.

The Oldest Prim on the Grid is a larger-than-real-size US 5-cent piece (a.k.a "nickel"), created almost 9 years ago (11 Feb 2002) by James Linden as a proof-of concept for the application of photographic images -- "textures" -- to prims. It, or a copy of it indistinguishable from the original, is preserved in a museum on the region called I-World Island.

Gibson is the last region to be reviewed in this series.  It is the first (but not the only) sim in Second Life to be named for a real, living person: William Gibson, who coined the word cyberspace in his 1982 short story "Burning Chrome" and who is a founding author of the cyberpunk movement in science fiction with such novels as Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

On the June 19, 2003 World Map of Second Life, Olive is denoted as a sandbox region.  In fact, it was the first entire sim devoted to that purpose, as compared to Morris and Plum (and later, Natoma), which have smaller public sandbox areas within their borders.  Thus, you might not expect anything to remain from its first days on the Grid... and you'd be right.

Eight sims remain to complete the Seconderth deep map.  I've been averaging two per week, which puts me on track to finish before my RL-imposed deadline of December 1.  But I'm fighting against more than mere Time...  I'm fighting what feels like a lag spike does in-world, and its name is "Why bother?"

The story of Blue's beginning is the story of another community project no longer there.  Unlike Little Tokyo (Sage), Venice (Bonifacio) or "Native American Village" (never even appeared on the map of Oak Grove), all vanished with almost no trace... also unlike Yamato in Dore, where the buildings remain but few know why... Americana is remembered.   Memorialized is more appropriate.

There's not much to see in Plum, and even less in Lime, but almost everything there that hasn't been temporarily rezzed in the sandbox area has been there since the regions opened in May 2003.

We will cut the ribbon on this new area on Tuesday, May 20th, at 4 pm. Boardman is located north of Clara. Use your landmark for the Amphitheater and fly north. A Linden will be there to answer questions.

I forget now which evening it was (Wednesday?), or even what got it started (#emeraldgate?), but somehow Toxic Menges concocted the idea for a party for SL Twitter-ers; a.k.a. a Tweetup. Skate Foss volunteered her gorgeous tropical island sim, Matanzas, and it took very little time for a consensus to decide that 11 am SLT, Sunday, would accommodate all of the necessary timezones.

Since an under age user can wear any avatar, I would insist on there being some clear indication on the avatar that they are under age. Not for any particular reason, but some region had to be the last of The Original 16 to be posted in this series, and Stanford drew the straw.  It's another mostly empty one, but unlike Clyde (due to recent abandonment, with 3/4 now for sale) or Federal (due to recent abandonment with none of it for sale), Stanford appears to be deliberately empty. Dominated by RacerX Gullwing's Snail Races, Xenophile Neurocam's Club Symmetry (the green half-dome), and Nympheas Textures (the butterflies, where she sells, among other things, textures to make "Jewerls" [sic])... Hawthorne is another of the Original Sixteen to be nearly devoid of remnants from the days of its first occupation.

The first of the overviews was taken in March of this year; the second, two months later.  I was out showing a new friend some of the 'ancient' builds nearby, and did a double-take, "Wait a minute... Varney's not empty anymore!"  And so it goes, in Second Life -- the single adjective that comes most often to my mind is ephemeral.
